Pick the right electric wheelchairs for your needs – your choices
are endless!
After a cane or a crutch, a wheelchair is the simplest device that is
used by disabled people for mobility. Battery powered wheelchairs, which
use electricity, are called electric wheelchairs. Electric wheelchairs
make use of either gears or belts, or sometimes both. These are much
more quieter and smoother in operation than the manual wheelchairs.
Furthermore, these wheelchairs require much less pressure to be exerted
to operate and maintain them and are much faster than manual
wheelchairs. These are available in a host of models and varieties to
cater to different mobility needs.
Electric pr powered wheelchairs vary in their strength and ability to
perform. Low-end electric wheelchairs have light frames that are
suitable for indoor use, but their frames crack, front forks bend, and
motors die when they are used to excess in the outdoors. The latest
high-priced models are more rugged and reliable, with frames designed to
handle more weight. Some newer electric models even have spring
suspension, which allows a smooth ride over uneven terrain.
Electric wheelchairs are available in three basic models, namely
rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and mid-wheel drive. Rear-wheel
drive is the traditional and most popular wheelchair style. Front-wheel
drives have become more common because provide tighter turning
functions. Mid-wheel drives provide the tightest turning of all, but
have a tendency to be unsteady when stopping and starting. You can also
look out for some additional features available in electric wheelchairs
like a power tilt or a recline to provide relief and help to prevent
pressure sores.
