Power chairs – when is a right time to give
your child the independence!
Mobility is valuable to a child that is growing up and coming to grips
with his disability. And an important part of being independent to be
able to move like the other kids. If you are considering power chairs
for your child but worried about whether he or she is ready for it yet,
read on. There are wheelchairs available that are built specially for
children and adolescents. If your child is around five to six years of
age, then he has not yet developed the physical strength to push a
manual wheelchair. Power chairs will give your child the freedom to zip
around at the push of a joystick.
Till recently the appropriate age for a child to start adapting to a
power chair was about ten years. But with rapidly advancing technology
and companies experimenting with electronics, this has changed. It is
now considered safe for a child to start using power chairs as early as
four years. However, it is recommended you seek specialist advice and
guidance on the most suitable device for your child.
Get your child the liberation that the power chair offer! These
wheelchairs are usually driven by electronic controllers that help with
smooth driving and braking. The controllers that look like joysticks
used for computer games, are very easy to operate. When making your
selection, make your child an active participant in the decision-making.
It is going to be more than a fancy toy for him and he should play a big
part in picking the one that he would like to make a part of his
identity.
