Basic specifications for setting up handicap
ramps in your home
Many a times wheelchair users have to maneuver chairs over uneven ground
or perhaps over a threshold or stairs. Handicap ramps are one of the
most basic means to make a building or space handicap accessible.
Popularly known as wheelchair ramps these mobility aids make riding a
wheelchair or electric scooter very convenient. There are an enormous
variety of handicap ramps available these days and each is designed to
meet specific customer requirements.
Most public and official
buildings invest in ramps to make buildings accessible to the disabled.
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) there are minimum
specifications that have been developed for handicap ramps. These
specifications are made with the handicapped in mind and work well for
people who are confined to wheelchairs.
Though these are not
compulsory for ramps built for homes, they can prove to be very useful
in reducing stress. They will also make your home friendlier to other
disabled friends or visitors who will visit you. The most basic
specifications for handicap ramps are as follows:
-
maximum slope is
one inch of rise for each linear foot of run
-
minimum clear
inside width between guardrails is 36 inches
-
maximum rise for
any given ramp segment is 30 inches. After rising 30 inches in
elevation, a flat rest platform must be provided before the ramp
continues to climb.
-
flat landings must
be at the top and bottom
-
landings should
always be as wide as the ramp itself
-
handrails/guardrails must be on each side of the ramp.
There are scores of great
quality handicap ramps available these days to suit your home
architecture and your mobility device. Pick one for your home today!
