Motability – making mobility accessible to
the disabled
Motability is a charity that operates in the United Kingdom and helps
disabled people of all ages to be truly independent. It does this by
helping them to use some or all of their Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
at the higher rate Motability component or War Pensioners Supplement to
buy or lease a mobility device. Though 99% of their work is aimed at
cars, they also help disabled people in acquiring wheelchairs and
scooters. The process of application to Motability scheme is really
simple.
Based on your requirements, you choose one or more models of car,
wheelchair or scooter available in the market. Next, visit the local
Motability accredited dealer that sells those models. All dealers have a
suitability questionnaire to help review your needs and identify
suitable products. Once you have identified your vehicle, you can own it
through the scheme and the dealer can help you out.
Before you make a decision about your mobility consider all your needs.
Furthermore, keep in mind that even if you don't drive, you can apply
for a car as a passenger and propose two other suitable people as
drivers through the Motability contract hire car scheme. And if you have
a child who is three or older, you can make an application on his behalf
too.
If you use a wheelchair or any other mobility aid, make sure you take it
with you when you visit your dealer to test drive a new car. The
Motability scheme began in 1978 and since then it has changed the lives
of almost 700,000 disabled people and their families. If you too need a
mobility aid, apply now.
