paraplegia
Paraplegia – definitely not the end of the
road!
Paraplegia is a condition in which a person cannot move his lower body,
waist down. Caused as a result of spinal cord injury, it can be a very
difficult and painful process for individuals. The spinal cord runs
through the center of the bony spine. It is like a system of telephone
wires that conduct messages from the brain, through the nerves, to all
parts of the body. Serious trauma causes this connection to break and
results in lifeless limbs and paraplegia.
Paraplegia can be caused due to various reasons. People can receive
damage to the spinal cord due to a motor accident, a diving mishap, a
fall, a sporting accident or a household accident. This debilitating
damage can also result from a tumor or blood clot on the spinal cord.
People from both sexes and of all ages with this disability.
People with paraplegia can usually have sensation and movement right to
the hips. They can also generally live totally independently with a
minimum of help. All they need is a mobility device and have the
necessary alterations to their home, their bathroom and car made. Since
their upper body is functional, they can perform almost all other
activities except moving around.
Paraplegia is a sad truth for many people. But it does not mean that you
should accept immobility as part of your life. Given the right equipment
and adaptations to buildings, paraplegics can do most things that the
rest of the community can. You can still work, study, enjoy recreation,
socialize, have relationships and have a family of your own.
