Accept your handicap to overcome it –
lessons from the life of Stephen Hawking!
One of the most famous scientists of our times is Stephen Hawking. The
witty scholar who conjures up a comely, happy image in your mind -
sitting secure in his power wheelchair, smiling. Truly, a man who has
conquered his handicap. One of the most important things that professor
Hawking has iterated in his message to other disabled people is to
identify and deal with your handicap. And you can see that practiced in
his own life.
Professor Hawking’s handicap came as a shock to him though he admits
that he was always a clumsy child. He was not good at ball games and his
handwriting was the despair of his teachers. When he was in college,
however, things seemed to be getting worse. Finally, at 17, he
discovered that he had motor neuron disease. It was difficult for a
young and able boy to accept this but he did. When he realized he was
going to die, he decided that he must at least live first before he
died.
Stephen Hawking worked hard, built a career and a family just like you
and me. Because he accepted and dominated his disability. How could
something like that happen to me? Why should I be cut off from the world
like this? Will I ever be able to live normal life again? Thoughts like
these are bound to haunt you. But remember that you have to accept your
handicap if you want to overcome it. Once you do that there will be a
million things that you can still do to help yourself and others like
you.
