Not for all – wheelchair rugby for disabled
people!
Sparking metal, friction-burns, tipping wheelchairs and head-on chair
slamming - welcome to the world of wheelchair rugby! If you thought that
disabled people have fewer ways to have a ball, you were wrong.
Developed by Canadian tetraplegics in the 1970s, wheelchair rugby is a
far cry for the docile games generally perceived for disabled people.
With hard-core action, this one game is for the strong at heart!
Wheelchair rugby has fast become a popular and competitive sport for
disabled people with dexterity problems and upper body disabilities. It
offers the players a chance to compete at the same levels as all other
participants. This game requires as intensive training as regular rugby
and is as much rigorous to play. However, originally called murder ball,
this is no game for easily intimidated! It is a matter of serious fun
and grave competition.
An incorporation of rugby, basketball and volleyball, this is a complex,
skilful and tactical game. One that has over the years, developed from a
rehabilitative, social activity for disabled people into an
international professional sport. Today it is practiced in over 22
countries worldwide and is involved in various level tournaments and
leagues. And scores of able-bodied enthusiasts come to cheer their
peers.
Some of the big players in this sport are Canada, the US, Australia, the
UK and New Zealand. There are 19 teams in the world-ranking list. There
are new teams springing-up everywhere with the increasing enthusiasm of
disabled people. It is a sport reputed for its high standards in
professionalism and level of competition. Including the handicapped and
offering them newer exciting avenues to make the most of their lives has
helped the society create these spaces for them.
