Helping handicapped people – can it be your
career?
For most handicapped people, the simple act of boarding a bus or tying
their shoes often seem insurmountable. Things that we accept as a part
of life are huge struggles for them. But there are many selfless
individuals who devote their lives and careers to helping handicapped
people. Their simple acts of kindness and service to the less privileged
in society offer handicapped people a breath of fresh air and them a
satisfying career. Here are some of the many avenues you can explore if
you would like to work disabled people.
Most people, who feel their call is helping the handicapped people
around them, approach the local Department of Rehabilitation. With a
bachelor's or master's degree in rehabilitation and experience working
with the disabled, many can start their endeavors as rehabilitation
career counselors. People with disabilities often find that their
handicap prevents them from finding work on their own. As a rehab
officer you can work with local service providers to provide specialized
counseling and opportunities to them.
Besides a career counselor, you can also work as a substance abuse,
general health or legal counselor. There are numerous job opportunities
with many agencies and hospitals that treat substance abuse, mental
health and workers' compensation claims for the disabled. In these
various jobs, you as a counselor will evaluate how an injury or health
problem affects the handicapped people’s ability to perform on their
job.
There are many other organizations, both government and non-government
which work towards mobilizing the society and handicapped people into
achieving their dreams and goals. You can derive immense satisfaction
from a career that focuses on independence for persons with
disabilities, so they can live in the community rather than being
institutionalized. Consider it when you make the next job-jump.
