How to select a commode chair most suitable for your needs
Most health insurance plans don't pay for a commode or commode
shower chair, therefore you might want to select a cost- effective model
to suit your needs. There are a variety of features available with
commodes so it is possible to choose a chair based upon your specific
needs.
Features of different commodes:
Most commodes have a weight capacity of up to 250 pounds although
heavier model chairs are available. Flip-back armrest chairs are handy
when a lateral transfer is necessary when getting in and out of a
showers for example. A removable armrest chair is particularly useful if
you have difficulty returning armrests back to the original postion.
If you need commodes with self-propulsion around shower rooms and other
places then chairs with wheels similar to wheelchairs make it easy to
propel yourself. Chairs with four small casters may be better of
doorway access is very narrow in shower rooms for example.
Some shower/commodes with smaller casters models offer locks for
breaking. This is very useful particularly in the bathroom when showering
where it can be slippery and you don't want the chair to move or slip.
On some chairs each caster has its own locking mechanism which can be
engaged by an assistant simply stepping down on a brake lever on each
wheel. Other shower/commodes offer a plunger break system, with these
the attendant reaches below the seat and pushes down on a lever to
engage the brake on all four wheels. If you are going to use commodes
over a standard toilet before showering then this style of brake system
could be more desirable.
The reversible side-opening chair feature this is particularly useful if
access to your private areas for bowel training and/or hygiene purposes
is needed. If your caregiver will be moving you around in your
shower/commode bench then a chair with a push-handle back feature could
be useful.
As you can see, there are a variety of available chairs features for
shower/commodes.
